Here at UK Sleepers, we have a wide range of shadow gap cladding available to ship across the UK. And so, what makes this one so special? Well… it’s earned its reputation as one of the most sought-after profiles in modern housing and commercial constructions – and for good reason.
We have been machining shadow gap boards for almost three decades now. During this time, we have provided them for everything from architect-specified self builds, garden room extensions, oak-framed barns, and even contemporary apartment interior walls. And while it is true that the profile itself plays the major role in the appearance of the final product, what ultimately defines the final appearance is the timber species.
The profile is machined with tongue and square edge, and the resulting visible face is 122mm wide in boards of 142mm wide overall – a 20mm difference created by the joint and the gap itself. Unlike the shiplap boards, that create more dramatic and traditional shadow line, shadow gap creates a much more delicate line and is therefore better suited for clean-lined contemporary architecture and extensions.
It is equally suitable for exterior facades and interior feature walls, which makes it very popular among architects and self-builders working on a consistent aesthetic vision both indoors and out.
British Larch (External) - One of the most popular choices when it comes to shadow gap boards for the exterior. High natural resin content of British Larch provides natural resistance and durability without any treatments, while natural variation of colours – ranging from pink to cream and brown tones – adds individuality to each installation that cannot be achieved with uniform materials. Untreated it will weather to silver-grey with time, while a coating of Treatex UV oil will help retain the original coloration for longer period. Starting at £28.49 + VAT per pack.
Air Dried Oak (External) - Air dried oak combines longevity and premium aesthetic qualities in one material. With moisture content of 20-30% air dried oak is more stable than green oak and thus better suited for precision machining of shadow gap profile. Boards feature natural knots and occasional imperfections, as well as natural tannin rich grain that improves with each year of exposure. Starting at £64.48 + VAT per pack.
Redwood Thermowood (Internal & External) - Redwood thermowood is heat treated to 7-10% moisture content without using any chemicals. Naturally coloured golden-brown, it weathers to dark charcoal grey colour – perfect colour palette for contemporary architecture and modern zinc, render and glass. No treatment required, although application of the UV oil will slow down the weathering process if retaining the original colouration is desirable. Starting at £32.49 + VAT per pack.
Radiata Pine Thermowood (Internal & External) - Heat treated Radiata Pine thermowood from New Zealand has the same moisture content of 7-10%, but it has virtually no knots. Ideal for high specification applications where uniform appearance is required. Starting at £49.99 + VAT per pack.
Kiln Dried Larch/Douglas Fir (Internal) - For internal installations requiring high level of dimensional stability, our kiln dried Larch and Douglas Fir boards provide solution. Machined from the timber dried to 7-10% moisture content, these boards remain stable in heated environments and will not gap or warp. Starting at £32.49 + VAT per pack.
Kiln Dried Oak & Ash (Internal) - For premium internal installations, there is no timber that provides warmth and depth of the grain like our kiln dried oak. Kiln dried ash is the alternative for the lighter tones – pale, elegant and beautiful on vaulted ceilings and feature walls.

Fresh boards exposed to the weather changes during summer period will be prone to cupping and warping – not because the boards are poor quality, but because all-natural timber responds to the moisture fluctuations. Installing at the correct time will cost nothing but make a big difference in the appearance of the finished product.
We provide up to 2 samples per customer for the cost of £5 postage fee, that is then refunded against the order of the cladding boards.
